Nau mai, haere mai! Welcome to the official website of
Te Rūnanga o Makaawhio.
We represent Kāti (Ngāti) Māhaki, a hapū or sub-tribe of the wider Ngāi Tahu and Ngāti Māmoe iwi (tribes) of Te Waipounamu, the South Island of New Zealand. Our hapū is centred at Makaawhio (Jacobs River) in South Westland, on Te Tai o Poutini (the West Coast), where we have a long and rich history.
WHERE WE ARE FROM
Te Tauraka Waka a Māui Marae is located in Mahitahi (Bruce Bay). Our primary hapū is Ngāti Māhaki. The marae takes its name from the nearby landing place of the Polynesian ancestor Māui.
The whare tūpuna is named Kaipo.
Te Tauraka Waka a Māui Marae opened in a dawn ceremony on 23 January 2005. The marae is only 40 km from the ancestral maunga Aoraki, and looks out to the Tasman Sea and to Heretaniwha — our hapu's traditional departing place for the spirits.
